How many times has it happened? Someone presents so nicely at interviews, and starts with such positivity and flair; then, all of a sudden – this uncomfortable, ubiquitous air of toxicity begins to contaminate the workplace environment?
Or it could start with gossip that slowly but surely trickles it’s way to spread its stenchful poisonous sense of negativity..
Whatever the cause, how does toxicity emanate from our shadows like this? And, how can we catch it much earlier? Way before lost morale begins to seep into productivity and heaven forbid – profit…
Carnegie research suggests that companies who have high employee engagement are 202% more successful than those who do not (see dalecarnegie.com). So we know this intangible affects the air around us, workplace environment, employee engagement, productivity and output, yet how to proactively work on it – when it just seems to creep up out of nowhere?!
As a previous lead statistical modeller, now turned psychotherapist – I have obsessed about these dynamics for the last 8 years. After all, mathematicians are trained to understand, simplify and solve for: patterns! It’s just that these are intangible ones…
So, what I’ve discovered is that there are 3 aspects to combatting toxicity, which I place under the umbrella of self-leadership. They are:
- Personality Blind Spots
- Lasersharp Awareness
- Personal Energy Management
Personality Blind Spots
Toxicity easily emanates from people’s personality blind spots. These are the parts of them they don’t even realise are there, but everyone else can see them (think Sheldon in Big Bang Theory, and at worse, think The Hulk when he struggles with his ‘other side’)! More on this in an other post though…
You can develop lasersharp awareness to assess these blind spots early on in the piece. This is easily done through observation and some simple questioning – along these 3 aspects of a person: foundation, character and perspective.
I have developed a really awesome diagnostic tool called FAST TRACK 2 TRUE COLOURS for this (how cool is that?!) . It captures information that no-one has thought to look for – and then populates a mentoring plan that anyone can use to mentor staff into integrating their blind spots consciously, thereby empowering them by helping them get their sh*t together. Again, how cool is that?!
So truly, it’s an amazing tool to have for any: manager, leader, executive, CEO, HR personnel, recruitment consultant, sales consultant etc. To be honest, it’s great for anyone to have this – imagine if you could screen for personality blind spots in your personal life? Wouldn’t that save you a few years in a relationship, job, friendship?!… Just saying…
Personal Energy Management (PEM)
Aaahhh – the most over-looked, under-acknowleged (wait, is that the same thing?…) important part of someone’s day to day. We have time-management – but why isn’t anyone talking about energy management?
I have been teaching PEM to my clients for years now and been practicing it on myself. Not only does it make you feel lighter and clearer, but the more you practice conscious energy management, the more you begin to look radiant. I call it my secret to inner beauty, and it truly works.
I also wrote a book on it called The Matrix Exposed. This book felt like I was pregnant to it – and I couldn’t wait to get it out! Anyone else feel like that during the process of creativity?
By the way, there are also some simple mindfulness exercises you can do straight away. Again, I’ll post more on these later – with some simple infographics you can download onto your smartphone’s pictures and practice them anytime, anywhere.
